- We were raised to live simply, not to waste. It was a lesson my mother taught me every rainy morning. You see, growing up, I had only one good pair of shoes. So on rainy school days, my mom would slip plastic bread bags over them to keep them dry. But I was never embarrassed. Because the school bus would be filled with rows and rows of young Iowans with bread bags slipped over their feet.
- Community colleges should be free for those willing to work for it – because, in America, a quality education cannot be a privilege that is reserved for a few. I think it’s a right for everybody who’s willing to work for it.
- I’m basically a libertarian. I’m a conservative on economic matters, and I’m a social liberal.
- I think we may need to call [Obamacare] something in the future different, but it is working…Obamacare, no question, has a very bad brand that has been driven intentionally by a lot of misinformation and a lot of paid advertising.
- There’s a prevailing idea that there’s something ethically wrong with being poor, and that America’s run according to Christian values. But when people are practicing genuine Christian values, they themselves are directly prosecuted…Let’s bear in mind that America just had midterm elections where $4 billion was spent on campaigning — [campaigning] is just telling you that something’s good. But feeding the homeless? That’s illegal.
- [Robin Williams] made all these people feel great. And at the same time, knowing that he had this sense of … what I make up in my mind - this low sense of self-worth, of belonging, of loneliness, of pain that all the money in the world can't cure. All the accolades and awards, and all the love from people all over the world … all that love could still not stop that man from saying, 'I am in so much pain.
- You gotta realize we are in America, and in America, there are no sacred days. Because we commercialize everything. We’re only 5 years away from 9/11 sales….’Come on down to Red Lobster! These shrimp are 9 dollars and 11 cents!’ It doesn’t matter what the holiday is. Martin Luther King Day, it’s gonna be the same thing. Gonna be watching TV like, ‘These Toyotas are practically free at last, free at last!
- I didn’t do anything wrong. I’m proud of my career and the job I did for this country.
- If we work hard, we shouldn't have to struggle. There are millions of us working hard who are struggling…We've got kids we have to take care of, and it's really depressing when you can't buy the proper shoes you need for your kids.
- The transportation system in this country is in a huge ditch. A pothole, if you will.
- In the NFL, apparently seeing is believing. If the NFL and the Ravens had to see that video to be moved to significant action, then shouldn’t those who support the league demand the same? To see action - to see change - before believing? As we all wait on the answer to this central question: ‘What exactly does the NFL stand for?
- We are the biggest buyer of cocoa in the world, and one of the biggest buyers of coffee in the world. Both of those commodities have gotten more expensive as a result of climate change.
