- The most common occupation for women in G rated films is royalty - which is a great gig, if you can get it.
- If you ask a Saudi Imam why women in Saudi Arabia can’t drive, he’ll say, ‘Because Islam demands it.’ But that’s absurd, because - first of all - Islam demands no such thing; and secondly, the only country in the world in which women can’t drive is Saudi Arabia. The inability to understand the difference between a cultural practice and religious belief is shocking among self-described intellectuals.
- When they beat me, they would tell me, 'You're all alone, scream as loud as you want. There is no one here to hear you’…I asked from God to die.
- [In Pakistan], I had two options. One was not to speak and wait to be killed, and the second was to speak up and then be killed. I chose the second.
- [Shonda] Rhimes has not just re-framed the stereotype of the ‘angry black woman,’ she has blown open what black female characters are allowed to do on television, including - most importantly - fronting a TV show.
- Stakes are high, because parenting black children in a culture of white supremacy forces us to place too high a price on making sure our children are disciplined and well behaved.
- Now let’s make two things clear: ISIL is not ‘Islamic.’ No religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of ISIL’s victims have been Muslim.
And ISIL is certainly not a state. It was formerly al Qaeda’s affiliate in Iraq, and has taken advantage of sectarian strife and Syria’s civil war to gain territory on both sides of the Iraq-Syrian border. It is recognized by no government, nor the people it subjugates.
ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way. - If we work hard, we shouldn't have to struggle. There are millions of us working hard who are struggling…We've got kids we have to take care of, and it's really depressing when you can't buy the proper shoes you need for your kids.
- I think there’s a sexual awakening going on among Iranian youth that transcends class, transcends religious barriers [and] religious differences at the moment. I’ve seen it really trickle down. So I think society is slowly changing, but the biggest fear for people is getting in trouble with the regime - getting in trouble with the law.
- The anti-feminist egalitarians believe that, whatever feminism’s positive past gains, its dominant modern version is hostile to men and demeaning to women. They are right. I don’t like the “anti-feminism” label because of its common meaning of “anti-woman” or “anti-equality.” But, call it reformed feminism or egalitarianism, we need a movement for true equality — against both old-fashioned sexism and new gender polarization.
- I don’t think you’re going to get that [high] caliber of act - the Rolling Stones, U2, Springsteen - to pay to play [the Super Bowl]. There’s no doubt there are acts out there that would pay for exposure, but I think that’s the wrong message for the NFL to send.
- The National Rifle Association often claims it is ‘America's longest standing civil rights organization,’ but apparently these minor issues were more important than the murder of an unarmed teen by a policeman, and the subsequent attacks by a militarized force on unarmed Americans in a U.S. city. [That] is the exact nightmare the NRA has been predicting. And yet, the NRA professes no kinship for those being crushed beneath the jackboots. It seems the NRA is only worried about the civil rights of white people.
