Bipartisanship & Compromise

- If we work hard, we shouldn't have to struggle. There are millions of us working hard who are struggling…We've got kids we have to take care of, and it's really depressing when you can't buy the proper shoes you need for your kids.
- We only have one commander in chief. He laid out his plan. I would never tell the enemy what I was willing to do, or unwilling to do. But he is the commander in chief - he made that decision. At this point in time, it’s important that we give the president what he’s asking for. And we gotta keep our eye on the ball. The issue here is about defeating a terrorist threat that is real and imminent.
- Sanctions alone could not stop Iran’s nuclear program. But they did help bring Iran to the negotiating table.
- [Fighting Climate Change] is important for every single person on the planet, which is why it has to be the greatest grassroots movement of all time. This is the battle of our lives. We’re fighting for our children.
- Catholicism played a large role in democratizing this country, and now Catholicism and religion can play a huge role in putting the values system right.
- The National Rifle Association often claims it is ‘America's longest standing civil rights organization,’ but apparently these minor issues were more important than the murder of an unarmed teen by a policeman, and the subsequent attacks by a militarized force on unarmed Americans in a U.S. city. [That] is the exact nightmare the NRA has been predicting. And yet, the NRA professes no kinship for those being crushed beneath the jackboots. It seems the NRA is only worried about the civil rights of white people.
- The White House has something in common with the rest of America, and that is disdain for Congress. It is hard to blame them.
- The anti-feminist egalitarians believe that, whatever feminism’s positive past gains, its dominant modern version is hostile to men and demeaning to women. They are right. I don’t like the “anti-feminism” label because of its common meaning of “anti-woman” or “anti-equality.” But, call it reformed feminism or egalitarianism, we need a movement for true equality — against both old-fashioned sexism and new gender polarization.
- Democrats want Washington’s NFL team to change its name. The Redskins‘ owner, Mr. Snyder, is the only person who can rightfully do this. Hence, if he chooses to comply and pays homage to a Republican president in the process, [Democrats] are stuck with it. Any further complaints would smack of political partisanship.
- You can't have it all, all at once. Who — man or woman — has it all, all at once? Over my lifespan, I think I have had it all. But in different periods of time things were rough. And if you have a caring life partner, you help the other person when that person needs it.
- A ceasefire is what we should prioritize now. A ceasefire protects civilians on both sides. It doesn't just say, "We're only concerned about people on one side." I've been to Sderot, I have stuck with those people, talking about those rockets and that indiscriminate rocket fire - and I've also been to Gaza three times since 2009. And I can tell you, those people are absolutely devastated….we need a ceasefire now.
- I think what we have created is a timid and often craven political culture in Washington. And I think the one thing that we haven't really captured is the degree to which money is driving that. I think that Republicans are fearful of primary opponents, so they don't want to move toward the middle - they move toward the extreme.
